Generative AI can be a useful tool to help you in your creative process. However, GenAI tools need to be used appropriately, as tools which assist in your learning, not as tools which replace your learning.
Things to bear in mind:
- Follow the guidance from your department, and only use GenAI tools where it is appropriate to do so.
- GenAI tools tend to create rather bland, general responses. On their own, they are unlikely to provide enough detail, insight or depth to meet your learning needs, or address the aims of your assignments.
- Reflect on the value of GenAI to your learning experience. Is it adding value to the process of your learning?
- Don’t use them as your only source of information and always check the outputs to make sure they are accurate, truthful and unbiased.
- Never copy & paste text directly from a generative AI tool. Edit, rephrase, and restructure to reflect your own ideas, knowledge, and learning.
- Ultimately, you are the one responsible and accountable for the content and quality of your work.
