Journals are published on a regular basis to showcase new research. They contain articles written on a particular subject area and present the latest findings and perspectives on a topic.
There are different types of journal paper - for example, research papers present the findings of new research, while review papers summarise or analyse the findings of multiple research papers. View the "How to read a journal article" tutorial to learn more:
You can find journals and search for articles in various ways.
You can browse the journals available to you using BrowZine:
If you're looking for a specific journal, you can search for it in StarPlus. Here's how:
The Library also provides access to a large number of archived journals (often called periodicals) from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Databases are search tools designed to help you discover secondary sources such as books, book chapters, journal articles and conference papers, as well as to explore primary sources including our extensive collection of digital archives and newspapers. Most databases allow you to sort, filter, save and export your results.
StarPlus is a good starting point, particularly for finding books held by the Library, but we also have an extensive list of databases for History, with different areas of specialism (for example, a focus on specific regions, time periods and themes). You can see the full list in our Database A-Z by selecting the subject option ‘History’.
